MISS 2017 Is a collection of silk sashes reminiscent of those worn by suffragettes in the early 20th century and then later by contestants in the Miss USA pageant. In this project The VICTORY GARDEN Collaboration return the sash to a context of political commentary from one of objectification, with text such as MISS REPRESENTED, MISS JUDGED and MISS LED.
President Trump owned the USA pageant until 2015 and the slogans reflect the artists’ frustrations with his misogynistic rhetoric and his assault on women’s health and reproductive rights.
The VICTORY GARDEN Collaboration is Louise Eastman, Jess Frost, Tara Geer, Katie Michel, Wendy Small and Janis Stemmermann.
MISS 2017 is included in the Public Collections of The New York Historical Society and The Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library at Yale University in New Haven.
